2008 was an interesting year for my running. I worked diligently with my Equinox trainers and made great improvements in my strength and flexibility. My VO2 Max, lactate threshold and overall endurance are far superior to the "average" 45 year old male, but for the first time I was forced to cut back on my mileage and cope with some significant disappointments. It's always enlightening to look back over my annual Training Log, not only to review the year behind but also in setting goals for the 12 months ahead. Since 2009 looks to be a year filled with unprecedented travel, I am going to take a more conservative approach to how much I can accomplish in between excursions, time zones and other forces beyond my control. My biggest goal is no longer to complete X number of marathons, reach a certain target Body Fat Percentage or accumulate some new Personal Best distance run. Rather, my resolution is to concentrate on maintaining/improving my fitness level and appreciating the simple joy of lacing up for run after run after run!

January 12: Paramount 10k. 47:05 Place: 121/456 Div: 18/32
My buddy Brian, whom I met at this race in 07, WON the event!

January 20: Bermuda Int'l Marathon. 4:17:51 Place: 33/79 Div: 33/79
To celebrate my Dad's 83rd birthday, my folks and I rendezvous'ed in Bermuda with my best friend, Glenn. A special treat was meeting Marathon Legend Kathrine Switzer.

February 21: The premiere of JB Benna's documentary "Ultra Marathon Man."
I was honored to be Emcee for the post-screening Q&A with JB and my running pal, Dean Karnazes.

April:
While in Ireland, I not only got to revisit the campus of the University of Dublin for a fun run, I got to join Paul Fallon's "Irish Running Tours" in beautiful Galway, for a memorable personal guided tour of some scenic local spots...which we also filmed for "The Afternoon Show."

May 17: Palos Verdes Half Marathon. 1:54:26 Place 234/1383. Div: 29/107
Initially disappointed that I couldn't run the Full Marathon, for which I'd trained, the dangerously high temperatures made the Half more than challenging!

August 23: Jet to Jetty 10k. 47:17 Place 58/286. Div 8/16
An annual event for me, I was excited to bring Mario along to run with me.

September 27: Hamptons Marathon. 4:26:11 Place 149/292. Div 18/30
Grueling torture test and true Marathon Misery, running through a rainstorm. But my best friend Glenn, who ran the Half, rewarded me with his usual good humor and hospitality. (Look for my upcoming article on this race in RUNNING TIMES Magazine)

November
In November, a hamstring injury from overuse, put me out of contention for December's St. Jude Marathon in Memphis. I was crushed...with the only consolation being that I had raised a few thousand dollars for their great Children's Hospital. The big lesson learned (actually, STILL learning) is how to include more rest & recovery time into my regimen. Not so easy for Type A's like myself who use running not only for recreation, but restorative therapy!

Other interesting running spots from 08 include the local trails in Runyon Canyon, my hometown of Chester County PA, NYC's Central Park, Toronto Canada and Melbourne Australia.

Thanks again for your continued interest & encouragement in these running endeavors. I hope 2009 will bring you many miles of smiles, too! Nelson
