As Time marches on, we humans get used to seeing changes in the mirror: a wrinkle or age spot that wasn't there the day before...less or greyer hair...hang on, am I actually getting shorter!? But Running has, for my body, been a kind of "Fountain of Youth" even as I became a Masters runner, sailing past 40 and 50 without issue.
But as I move perilously closer to 60 (I'm 58), I am noticing differences I knew were inevitable. Skin sensitivity, joint discomfort, diminished endurance (these days, 7 or 8 miles is a "long run") and yet, I am still out there several days a week...doing whatever it takes to keep up on mileage. I learned last year during the height of the Pandemic to rely less on the treadmill and become more steely, regardless of the weather or the terrain.
I did 6 different virtual races, ran throughout the challenges of some sad family crises and survived a crazy, random attack while trotting along one of my regular, favorite running routes (I worked with detectives to identify the perpetrator and, as of this writing, he is behind bars awaiting trial for 4 (!) felony assaults. God bless the NYPD!). I worked with my trainers, both virtual and in person, to keep as strong and flexible as my carcass will allow.
The biggest project of the year was, and continues to be, the move into our new Harlem dream house...which we've eked in just before the end of the calendar year. Our new place has a gorgeous home gym, so I can rediscover my love affair with indoor running, as well as explore new neighborhood routes around town. A book on the subject ("Your Home is Your Castle") will be forthcoming in 2022 and, God and body willing, so will many more happy miles.
Thank you, as always, for your interest and enthusiasm for all my running endeavors!
