Looking back at last year's report, my resolution was to run LESS but improve the QUALITY of my mileage. I think I accomplished that--especially having to squeeze in training and races with my new bi-coastal residency and the inherent travel/time zones. Of course, it's always a learning process to be a "Masters Runner" (over 40) and tempering the physical changes going on in my body with the desire to excel and compete...if only against myself! Overuse injuries such as a serious Achilles sprain and a strained back were challenges, but my trainers Mario, Jacob & Dominick helped make these only minor bumps in the road to my overall fitness and I've had a calendar filled with memorable moments. Thank you, as always, for your interest & encouragement; it makes "the loneliness of the long distance runner" not a bit lonely!

April 11 - Scottish 10k (Central Park, NYC) 52:00. Place: 2716/7618, Div: 177/348
Pouring rain, icy cold temperature and it didn't make a bit of difference! A huge crowd and my first race in Central Park as a member of the New York Road Runners, made this a very happy morning in spite of the weather.

June 13 - NYRR Dash 10k (Central Park, NYC) 51:36. Place: 1401/4540, Div: 97/216
Beautiful day to run in the park and celebrate Spring!

July 17 - Central Park Conservancy 4 miler (NYC) 31:22. Place: 1453/5432, Div: 105/255
Benefitting Manhattan's breathtaking park, this was my first competition at this distance...so of course it was a Personal Record! I was surprised and delighted by my pace of 7:50 and subsequently decided to strive to maintain faster-than-usual speeds for these shorter distance events.

September 26 - Hamptons Marathon 26.2 miles. (Easthampton, NY) 4:24:00. Place 174/294. Div: 15/25
I love this small marathon event in breathtaking Easthampton and the weather conditions were sublime (unlike last year). Grew back my beard, too (like last year!). I decided that my 15th marathon might indeed be my swan song to that great distance, but I had so much fun and ran pain-free that I may just opt to continue again in 2010 and beyond. Besides, it's always a great opportunity to hang out with my best friend, Glenn. We'll see!

November 22 - Race to Deliver 4 miler (Central Park, NYC) 31:38. Place 1097/4760, Div: 83/207
Coming off a back injury, I was thrilled to feel so good on this brisk race morning and kicked butt! I made it in just 16 seconds off my previous PR.

2009 - 1070.1 (1722.16 km)
2008 - 1152 (1853.96 km)
2007 - 1300 (2091.7 km)
2006 - 1064 (1712.34 km)
2005 - 1143 (1839.08 km)
2004 - 944.9 (1520.34 km)
2003 - 834.2 (1342.22 km)

"Running is a contact sport. Unlike sports such as football, we don't collide with our opponents; we collide with the pavement." Hal Higdon, four-time world masters champion.
